National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Your school is invited to participate in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST’s) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program for students majoring in science, engineering, and mathematics. This letter contains information about the program at NIST’s Boulder, Colorado, campus. A similar program exists at NIST’s Gaithersburg, Maryland, campus.

Applications for participation in the SURF NIST Boulder program are accepted only from colleges or universities, and not from individual students. We invite you to prepare a single proposal from your institution to the SURF NIST Boulder program. (A separate proposal would be required for NIST Gaithersburg.) This proposal will include a portion completed by an institutional representative and a set of materials provided by each student applicant.

Students applying to the SURF NIST Boulder program will be matched to opportunities in the Boulder divisions:

  • Optoelectronics
  • Quantum Electrical Metrology
  • Electromagnetics
  • Thermophysical Properties
  • Time and Frequency
  • Quantum Physics
  • Materials Reliability
  • Mathematical and Computational Sciences

The student application form allows students to indicate in which opportunities they are most interested. We will have positions for up to 22 students. Top ranked students will be matched to opportunities according to the students’ preferences and research interests. The SURF NIST Boulder program will run from May 26 through August 7, 2009, with adjustments made to accommodate students on an academic quarter system.

Please circulate the information about this program to other appropriate academic departments and administrative staff at your institution.

Further information and application materials may be found at these Web sites:

The NASA Science and Technology Institute (NSTI-SSP)
The NASA Science and Technology Institute (NSTI) Summer Scholars Program, a component of the Institute, is a ten-week summer research experience for undergraduates from minority institutions (rising juniors and/or rising seniors) who are pursuing degrees in the STEM disciplines.
NSTI Scholars will be matched with a mentor to conduct NASA-relevant
research.   Possible locations for the internships include Ames Research
Center in California, Johnson Space Center in Texas, and Glenn Research Center in Ohio.  NSTI-SSP scholars will also have the opportunity to participate in professional development workshops. Undergraduate students from the NSTI Cluster Schools are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Project (JPFP)

The Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Project (JPFP) increases the number of graduate degrees awarded to underrepresented persons (women, minorities, and/or persons with disabilities) participating in the STEM workforce, thereby eliminating the shortage of skilled workers.
Approximately 20 students are selected annually to receive financial support for their graduate education. http://www.uncfsp.org/spknowledge/default.aspx?page=program.view&areaid=1&contentid=177&typeid=jpfp

Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology (MUST)
The MUST Project awards scholarships and internships to undergraduate students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)degrees.
Each year, 100 students receive one-year competitive scholarships of up to $10,000 and a paid internship relevant to their chosen field.
